Giving Thanks

May you be encouraged this Thanksgiving as you give thanks to the Lord for all that He is and all that He has done. "Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Give thanks to him; bless his name!"

Thanksgiving is just around the corner. It is a magical day for being with family, eating turkey, watching football, and hopefully spending some time giving thanks to the Lord for all that He is and all that He has done. This is a wonderful opportunity to look at what the Bible has to say about being thankful!

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
1 Thessalonians 5:18

Pastor John MacArthur explains it this way:
"With obvious exceptions of personal sin, he is saying no matter what happens to you in life, be thankful. No matter what lot, no matter what circumstance, no matter what struggle, vicissitude, trial, testing, be thankful, give thanks. No matter what the situation we are to find a reason to thank God. This is not some nebulous thanks fired off into space; it is a thanks given directly to God." (Sermon entitled “Giving Thanks in Everything”, preached on April 28, 1991)

We who are in Christ, are to be constantly lifting our thanks up to Him no matter what we are going through. We know that all things come from His hand and are a part of His perfect plan. We also know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28). So, we can have confidence that even in hard times we can be thankful that each trial will be for our good and we have a gracious God that we can draw close to in that time. We also give thanks knowing that He will receive the glory due His name in all things.

May you be encouraged this season, as we draw near to Thanksgiving Day when you run across many other passages of scripture that encourage you to give thanks unto Him and praise His name.

Psalm 100 English Standard Version (ESV)
A Psalm for giving thanks.
1 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!
2 Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!
3 Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!
5 For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.
